While my friend Ken and I have sold at card shows a few times, we have yet to host a live selling show online. Until now.
This Tuesday, May 12, at 6:00 p.m. PT / 9:00 p.m. ET, we’ll be on Whatnot, selling sports cards. The focus will be on vintage baseball, football and basketball, but some other cards will be available as well.
We plan to run the auction for two hours, so I hope to see you here (the channel is “vintagecardvoyage” and the Whatnot app is available on Apple and Android). Here’s a referral link that should give new Whatnot users a $15 credit after signing up and making a first purchase. Enter “DTC” in the chat when you arrive so we’ll know who’s coming from the newsletter.
In this issue you'll find:

Set Profile: 1975 Hostess Baseball
I grew up in a house where my parents tried their best to avoid having too many sweets. Sure, I saw Fruit Loops, Cap’n Crunch and Count Chocula in the cereal aisle, but they wouldn’t see the inside of our kitchen.
The same can be said with Twinkies, Ho Hos and Ding Dongs, so while I was in prime sweets-eating age when Hostess started to put baseball cards on their family size snack cake packaging in 1975, I was none the wiser.
That’s why I was so psyched when, after buying a collection last year, I discovered that it included over 100 Hostess cards, including a few from the initial 1975 set.

1975 Hostess #133
The 1975 set had 150 cards and featured 31 Hall of Famers, including Robin Yount’s rookie card (and according to this article, a George Brett card was also considered). There were also a few errors, including Bill Madlock listed as a pitcher and Burt Hooton’s name misspelled “Bert Hooten.”
The cards came in panels of three on the packaging, which thus meant a lot of hand-cutting adventures for the kids who didn’t recruit their parents (see below).

1975 Hostess #!27
The cards were available on a variety of Hostess products, and specific cards were associated with specific products. That meant cards like Yount, Hank Aaron, Johnny Bench and Reggie Jackson are harder to come by, appearing on packages of the less-popular snacks.
Bob Gibson’s card, meanwhile, was part of a panel on the Ho Hos package. That package was smaller than the ones for the other treats, and that meant the card panels (the same size across all packaging) were more likely to be creased.

1975 Hostess #143
Amazingly, among the 8,658 cards from the 1975 Hostess set in the PSA database, 2,340 (or 27%) of them are graded gem mint, and another 3,280 are a mint 9. Based on a quick search on the PSA website, the highest individual card sale was for a Nolan Ryan PSA 10 on April 26, 2026, for $1,009.
There’s also a separate set specific to Twinkies. There were 60 cards total, distributed in select West Coast markets, and single cards came in the packages themselves. The numbering was … a bit off. It started 1-36, while the final 24 came in between numbers 40 and 136. You can tell the difference between this set and the regular Hostess set because the cards in the Twinkies set have black bars at the top and bottom of the back of the cards.
Do you have any of these cards? If so, what’s your favorite?
